Below knee amputation and physiotherapy rehab

Below knee amputation is quite common amputation seen in the United Kingdom. It may be due to cancer or accident leading poor blood supply to affected lower limb in which surgery as not being effective to restore blood supply. Doctor, patients and their families will jointly make the decision to have the amputation.

patient will be referred for physiotherapy post amputation and for prosthetic limb. Rehabilitation will start with patient taught how to care for the below knee stump. Correct bed transfer and bed to chair transfer using banana board or standing with zimmer frame on the remaining lower limb and pivoting into wheelchair will be taught.

Once tthe wound as healed, patient will be taught how to mobilise with temporary prosthetic leg with the parallel bars and gradually progress from mobilising holding two bars to one and to walking unaided in the physio gym. Strengthening exercises to the lower limb will also be taught.

phantom limb pain is experienced by most amputee inwhich they have sensation of pain in the amputated limb. This is treated with TENS machine and education of the patient that the brain centre concerning the amputated limb is still active and that’s is why they have phantom pain.

Patient will be taught mibiling outdoor with the prosthetic limb and how to adapt to their life now post amputation.
